Ján Viazanička (1983) is photographer, teacher, curator and editor-in-chief of the Slovak photography magazine www.dokumentmagazin.sk. He graduated from the Department of Photography and New Media at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava (2009). He won Slovak Press Photo (2016, 2018) award and he received a nomination in the Czech Press Photo competition (2016). In 2017, he was named Slovak Photographer of the Year. He is a co-founder of the HÁJOVŇA – cultural and tourist center in Banská Štiavnica (SK).
In his artwork, he deromanizes catholic Slovakia romanticized by Slovak photographer Karol Plicka in the turn of 19th and 20th century. It undermines common symbols and stereotypes through satire, humor or harsh commentary. He combines documentary snapshots with artistically abstracted observations.
