By March 31st, 2900 photographs by authors from 16 countries have been submitted to this year’s Rovinj Photodays competition. As expected, the number of submissions was mostly by photographers from the region, but many came from other countries such as Iraq, Ireland, Korea, the USA, Spain…
This year’s selection was conducted by a three-member jury of renowned experts in their respective fields:
1. Dejan Sluga, Program Manager and Director of the Photon Center for Contemporary Photography – President of the Jury, SLO
2. Sabina Salamon, curator at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka, CRO
3. Hrvoje Slovenc, photographer, NY
The jury had the challenging task of selecting the finalists of the competition and, among them, the winner of the Grand Prix, i.e. the overall winner of the competition.
They were given complete autonomy in the judging process, regarding both the number and placement of the finalists, to insure that the final exhibition represents the very best of the work sent in.
“In the pandemic year of 2021, a significant number of photographers sent in their submissions for the Photodays competition among which, once again, the younger generation stands out. The quality of the submissions especially varies among them, but the jury had more than a sufficient number of works that stand out in front of them, so the decisions were not that easy sometimes. In a lot of works, the authors thematize the present situation in one way or another, not necessarily only in the category of documentary photography, and the jury paid special attention to these works.
Special attention was also paid to quality series from the region, which deal with topics specific to this area. At the same time in the “landscape” category, as the current jury, we put even more emphasis on “urban landscape” or “cityscape”, where we chose two excellent series. In the categories of nudes and portraits, where time and space are harder to reflect, we mostly looked for originality and modern approaches.” – said Dejan Sluga, jury president.
This year, amongst the finalists were six authors from Croatia, five authors from Serbia, two authors from Slovenia, and one author from Iraq, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and Slovakia each.
The winner of the Grand Prix will be announced on the RPD website and social media on May 8, 2021 when, under normal circumstances, the winner would be presented with their prize at the grand final dinner in Rovinj – a check for 2,000 EUR, solo exhibition with an accompanying catalog in Rovinj during the Festival in 2022 and weekend stay in Rovinj.
