Dear friends of photography,
at this year’s competition, as of January 31st, 2500 photographs by authors from 16 countries were sent in and, as expected, the number of entries was preceded by photographers from the region.
Given the steady increase in the number of applications in the past few years, before the beginning of the competition we informed you about the changes to the application and the judging process. The fact that all the nominated works of the final exhibition go to the permanent collection of the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Zagreb imposed upon us the imperative of responsibility towards the contemporary photography scene that the festival represents.
This year’s selection was conducted by the six-member jury of renowned experts in their respective fields:
1. Hrvoje Slovenc, photographer, NY – president of the jury
2. Bruna Kazinoti, photographer, HR
3. Ana Frangovska, National Gallery of Macedonia, MK
4. Una Popović, Salon of the Museum of Modern Arts, RS
5. Dr. sc. Iva Prosoli, Museum of Arts and Crafts, HR
6. Matic Zorman, photographer, SLO
The jury had the task of selecting the finalists of the competition and among them the winner of the Grand Prix, i.e. the overall winner of the competition. In the judging process, they were given autonomy to decide on the number and composition of the finalists, to ensure that the final exhibition represents the very best of the work sent in.
“ It was an absolute pleasure to be one of the judges for this year’s Rovinj Photodays contest. It was also an honour to work with other members of the jury. Together, we selected works that are daring both visually and conceptually. In every category there were bodies of work that went beyond the mere recording of reality. The selected photographers understood that it was not enough just to see a building, a body, or a face. The photographs we selected used those subjects as tools to talk about larger issues. Not created simply to show things as they are, they have a point of view.” – said the president of the jury, Hrvoje Slovenc.
This year, 5 authors from Croatia, 3 from Italy, one author from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, the Netherlands and Russia each, and an author duo from France and Belgium, were among the finalists.
An exhibition of works of the 13 authors will be the focal point of events at the festival which will take place on 3 and 5 May in Rovinj.
The festival will once again be filled with events and exhibitions and will feature a full program for visitors to take part in, including several presentations, two great fashion workshops and a series of professional lectures.
Traditional co-operation between the Museum of Arts & Crafts and Rovinj Photodays includes the finalist’s exhibition in Zagreb and their inclusion in the Collection of Newer Photography of the Museum.
The best authors in each category will receive the statuette “Kadar” and a paid stay in Rovinj during the finals. For the second or third place won, the authors are given a written acknowledgment. The works of all finalists, with accompanying catalog, will be exhibited at the exhibition of finalists in Rovinj in May 2019.
In the autumn term, the exhibition moves to the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Zagreb, which is also a partner of the Rovinj Photodays festival. Selected works of the finalists will enter (in agreement with the authors) in the permanent collection of the Museum of Arts and Crafts.
GRAND PRIX 2019
The winner of the Grand Prix wins a €2,000 cash prize, Epson Sponsor Award, an independent exhibition with a catalog in Rovinj during the Festival in 2020, and a weekend stay in Rovinj, dates as agreed upon.
